FINNISH METEOROLOGICAL INSTITUTE

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is a national meteorological office under the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications. FMI employs about 650 people with an annual budget of 72 million EUR (2016) and produces roughly 350 scientific publications per year. Roughly half of the 650 people work in research and development, whereas the other half works at the weather and safety centre.

The merits I see in AIRCOAT are in the seamless cooperation between industry, research and communication partners, which can lead to significant improvements in vessel energy efficiency. We start out in nanometer scale, from 3D structure of the foil on ships’ hulls, and gradually proceed to larger scale to understand the potential gains of wide application of AIRCOAT to the global ship fleet.

Dr Jalkanen has worked extensively on modeling the environmental impacts of shipping, concentrating especially on air emissions from ships. The work of FMI ship emission team has been used for policy support purposes in issues concerning the reductions of sulphur and nitrogen emissions of ships in regional (Baltic Sea, North Sea) scale as well as globally. Assessments of human health impacts, environmental damages and climate consequences are also topics of our current research.
