The video introduces the AIRCOAT technology and relevant concepts such as biomimicry, the Salvinia effect, and how the AIRCOAT foil comes together. The video also features footage of our partners' testing and experiments, from partners such as AquaBioTech Group and HSVA.
AIRCOAT was featured in REVOLVE magazine on the uniqueness of using biomimetics (technology inspired by nature) on ship hulls, and the ideas behind the AIRCOAT concept.
"In the course of evolution, nature has developed a multitude of mature strategies to overcome all kinds of physical hurdles. Biomimetics tries to understand the underlying mechanisms of these biological phenomena and to transfer and translate them into technical concepts. Even though biomimetics is still quite young as a science, the basic idea has influenced technical inventions in the past as well. "
KIT Wins the First Prize of the BMBF Validation Award!
AIRCOAT project partner and scientific coordinator Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) recieved the first prize of the Validation Award by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), for their work on the ARES project, a predecessor to the AIRCOAT technology.
AIRCOAT partners came together on 22 May through 24 May to celebrate the first year of AIRCOAT, and discuss plans for the next two years of the project, including more experiments on the AIRCOAT foil, and small-scale and large-scale testing.
The AIRCOAT Consortium.
The meeting took place in the industrial facilities of PPG Coatings by the Amsterdam Port. PPG took the opportunity to take partners on a tour through the facilities, showcasing the history and some of the production aspects within PPG Coatings.

The First Advisory Board Meeting
The first Advisory Board (AB) meeting took place prior to the consortium meeting, with attendance of representatives from all partners.
Partners presented their work before the board, and showcased some prototypes of the AIRCOAT foil. The AB members got the chance to ask questions about the implementation and scaling of the AIRCOAT project, and shared their expertiese with the partners. The AB members expressed great enthusiasm about the development and the future potential of AIRCOAT.

AIRCOAT and the Public
AIRCOAT at Hannover Messe
AIRCOAT partners KIT and BIC of The City University of Applied Sciences Bremen presented the project as part of their booths in the Hannover Messe. Hannover Messe has been the world’s most important industrial tradeshow and largest capital goods exhibition for years. This year, the exhibition had over 215,000 attendees, and approximately 6,500 exhibitors.

Science in the Citadel
Science in the Citadel is a one-day science extravaganza held in Gozo, Malta, to celebrate the best of science and technology, research and practice on the Maltese islands. AquaBioTech Group represented the AIRCOAT project while showcasing biofouling organisms, Salvinia plant demonstration, the remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) and the AIRCOAT introduction video.

The AIRCOAT Leaflet
AIRCOAT developed an informative leaflet that briefly explains the AIRCOAT concept and introduces the project.
To further explain the concept of AIRCOAT and the work of this project, the AIRCOAT consortium has put together a series of FAQs that answer a variety of questions. These are all available on our website.
