Danaos Shipping is a leader in ship management with a fleet of 60 container-ships. Danaos charters out vessels to a geographically diverse group of shipping liners, including most of the largest ones globally. Danaos has also a rich background in research activity dedicated to innovation in ship operation and has participated in several projects funded by EU.

AIRCOAT Project is a revolutionary innovation action coming to “rock the boat” in hull coating industry. AIRCOAT beginning from a smart idea will gradually become a product ready to constitute a game changer in the market and I am looking forward to play a role along this road of evolution. As a representative of a maritime organisation, I will mainly be engaged in the assessment of AIRCOAT technology overall impact in shipping.

Mr. Fotis Oikonomou holds an M.Sc. in shipping port and transport Economics from Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Netherlands. An entrepreneur with years of experience in product management and business development gained in a diverse range of industries including sectors in logistics, urban transportation, port and shipping. For the last three years, he has been engaged in operational Research activity in DANAOS, applied to maritime industry. He is author of several papers mostly with a sea-transportation background. Finally, he has been an active participant in Research Programs funded by the EU.

AIRCOAT offers a best of breed technology for hull coating with highly promising benefits for vessel management. Our contribution in AIRCOAT is to identify risks of application, quantify benefits arise and evaluate the product market readiness. Having 30 years in applied research for ship operation I envisage that AIRCOAT will introduce a game-changing technology towards operational performance excellence and environmental sustainability.

Professor Takis Varelas is Danaos Research Centre Director since 2004. Previously he had spent 30 years in managerial positions in maritime and information companies. For more than 10 years he followed an academic career being a Professor in Technical University of Crete. He has participated in more than 20 EU research projects. Varelas has been awarded with the highest distinction in Operation research, the Franz Edelman award from INFORMS (Institute for operational research and management science) for his work ORISMA (operation research in ship Management).
