The Air Induced friction Reducing ship COATing (AIRCOAT) project aims to develop a passive air lubrication technology inspired by the Salvinia effect. Applying the AIRCOAT technology to ship-hull surfaces will produce a thin permanent air layer when submerged in water. This will reduce the overall frictional resistance while acting as a physical barrier between water and the hull surface. In addition to reducing energy consumption, the air barrier will inhibit the attachment of maritime organisms (biofouling).
6 Months of AIRCOAT
Website Launch - Anchors Away
Earlier this year, we finalised and launched the AIRCOAT website (www.aircoat.eu), which presents a preview of the project, and offers a number of resources for those interested in learning more about AIRCOAT.
We have come together for two consortium meetings since the start of AIRCOAT (Brussels and Hamburg). A concept workshop was also held in Karlsruhe, where partners toured the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology labs. This is where parts of the AIRCOAT project are being tested and developed.

AIRCOAT at SMM Hamburg
AIRCOAT was presented as part of the Fraunhofer booth at SMM Hamburg - the leading international maritime trade fair. In light of SMM Hamburg, we organised AIRCOAT's first stakeholder workshop.

First Stakeholder Workshop
Fifty attendees from different sectors and backgrounds joined the workshop, and asked questions regarding AIRCOAT, such as the economic benefits of the project, and the scientific feasibility of its application.

To explain further the concept of AIRCOAT and the work of this project, the AIRCOAT consortium has put together a series of FAQs that answer a variety of questions. These are all available on our website.
